The pattern is doing a job
Eating to soften stress, tiredness, or loneliness works in the short term, which is exactly why it repeats. Treating it as weakness misses the mechanism and adds shame, and shame rarely produces steadier habits.
A more workable stance: assume the pattern is solving something, then look for what.
Three questions instead of a rule
Asked with curiosity, before or after — either is useful.
- What was happening in the ten minutes before this?
- What was I hoping the next ten minutes would feel like?
- What else, realiztically available right now, moves me toward that feeling?
Add before you subtract
For many people, under-eating earlier in the day amplifies the intensity of later urges. Regular meals with protein and fiber, adequate hydration, and enough sleep tend to lower the volume before any behavioral strategy is needed.
Then build a short list of non-food options you actually like. Not virtuous options — appealing ones.
When to bring in a professional
If eating feels out of your control, is followed by compensating behaviors, or is causing distress, please speak with a licensed clinician, therapist, or registered dietitian. Eating disorders are medical conditions that deserve individual care.
